Fredonia Arizona is a small Mormon town on the Arizona Strip near the Utah border. A couple gas stations, small stores, lodges and restaurants line its main street, but Kanab UT right up the road has a lot more options.
Fredonia is the closest real town to the North Rim. It is also near the 60-mile dirt road that leads to Toroweap, the furthest outpost off the North Rim of the western Grand Canyon. Fredonia also has an office for Kaibab National Forest which is the best place to get road information for the Forests numerous road, most of which one needs to use to access North Rim trails within the National Park
As far as recreational activities or any activities at all, Fredonia doesn't offer a whole lot, but there are many world-class attractions close by. The North Rim, Kanab Creek Wilderness, Toroweap, Lake Powell, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, and Zion are just a few destinations within a half days drive or less.
